Our project “Digitaljakten” has the objective to make Internet and smartphones available to the older generation. We show them the benefits that Internet has and all the information that they can find.

The main focus is to solve problems together. A problem can be to navigate through Internet so they can identify if a message received is spam or real. But not all detectives work at the same place and that is when you can find Carlo (in the picture) who takes a more personal approach and help them move forward.

Visits in senior houses

We have started visits in senior houses. At first we were not sure what does
it yield to manage such an activity. We did not know how to prepare for this
event. In spite of the doubts, we were looking forward to meeting up with such an
experience. In fact, it was quite tough. The first time we crossed the door to the
house, I was assigned to a woman with considerable weak hearing, so I had to
higher my voice at her when I wanted to talk with her. She was quite
introvert, because she was not used to have visitors. Well, I returned home with
weakened voice, totally tired, but absolutely satisfied. Before I left, she expressed
her appreciation and explained to me how much it means for her that she could
speak to someone. So we realised how potential this activity is in concern of
getting to know other young men, spending time with them beneficially, creating
friendships and how many joy we could spread by being perseverant in this
charity. So we continued with this, sometimes two times a week. We thought we
will adapt to the difficulties. Sometimes it was tougher afterwards. Rather than
adapting to them, we learned to welcome them, arbitrarily, in order to conjure up
a smile on a face.
Later we introduced monthly birthday parties with a performed musical show,
when many of the seniors sing with us and enjoy beautiful moments of disruption of
the difficult monotonous life.

    🔵LATVIA "3 ½ years ago, I moved to Latvia bec 🔵LATVIA

"3 ½ years ago, I moved to Latvia because of my studies. Volunteering with @iyc_latvia tougher with a mutual friend I was able to get to know Roberts who was diagnosed with #multiplesclerosis in his late 20’s. His situation and our conservations truly impressed me.
Last weekend we visited our mutual friend who lives together with his brother and mother in a suburb of Riga and helped him celebrate his 40th birthday. He has a Ph.D. in vision sciences but cannot pursue his career due to his advanced illness.

Since he studied German for a while, we mostly speak in German besides Latvian and English. Especially discussing the cultural differences growing up in Latvia, Germany and the U.S. are very entertaining for each of us.

Our visits at his place are always extremely #inspirational because despite his condition, he is radiating positivism and is encouraging us to see life as a gift. It may sound like a cliché, but we seem to benefit more from these visits than Roberts, since it helps us put our own little ¨problems¨ in perspective.

Next time we plan to take him on a trip and visit the beach to see the Baltic sea", Félix, one of the @iyc_latvia volunteers

🔴SPAIN In Spain, we are adapting volunteer act 🔴SPAIN

In Spain, we are adapting volunteer activities to the new situation. We know that conditions are different, but we dont want to stop serving people living in a vulnerable situation.

We believe that now, more than ever, we have to be close to those who need it most. For this reason, young people continue to help in the distribution of food or breakfast routes with the homeless.

Thanks to the volunteers who get involved even in the most difficult moments!

We have already started working on the new awarene We have already started working on the new awareness campaign. But before you know it, we want to show you one of the previous campaigns.

From International Youth Cooperation we appeal to youth with this awareness campaign. The purpose is to promote the social participation of young people, to make them aware of the importance that anyone can be capable of changing the world. You just have to put the routine aside and want to make that difference. And to do so, you don't need magic, rituals or fire ... you just have to have that desire to want to get involved for others and maintain that good will to be able to go out there and let ourselves be marked by the world.

We operate in 12 countries that develop activities to promote a culture of responsibility and solidarity among young Europeans: social action programs in favor of children and youth, training and educational programs, youth exchanges and volunteering.

#InternationalYouthCooperation works from its birth to promote concern for solidarity in young peoplearound the world, investing on a youth that is capable of learning, committing and working selflessly to achieve a fairer and more inclusive society. And with the hope these 12 countries are just the beginning.

🔴CROATIA Over the months we have tried to help 🔴CROATIA

Over the months we have tried to help out in the dinning room that the Sisters of Charity have in Zagreb. It is a simple volunteering. From #IYCCroatia we try to help in the kitchen, serve dishes, give conversation and pick up the dinning room once all the diners have left.

In short, they are not great actions, but you can see the impact it has on many of the people who go to that dinning room. It is striking that young university students try to serve food with a smile, a phrase of encouragement, a joke.

And for the volunteers themselves, it is a turning point.

The sisters have asked us to help out at a summer camp they organize every summer. We will see if, due to COVID, we can really help. For a supportive summer!

🔴HUNGARY From IYC Magyarország one of the act 🔴HUNGARY

From IYC Magyarország one of the activities in recent months has been helping the Hungarian Down Foundation for the Development of the Mentally Disabled.

We started last summer by painting three of the apartments they have in one of the districts of Budapest. During the one week of work in August, there was no time to finish everything up: as of now we have been able to finish painting one of the apartments and change the hardwood floors of one of the rooms that was in a very bad condition.

Between several university students and the help of a bricklayer who cooperates with us we have managed to leave a nice apartment for our 5 friends. We were very grateful that during the two days of work we were served some very delicious dishes for us at lunchtime. A detail that makes the work more enjoyable.

In the photo you can see Ábris and Efra.

Due to the current situation, volunteer activities have been limited. Despite this, in Spain we are trying to help in various solidarity acts by complying with hygiene and sanitation measures.

#PaintingforOthers is one of the projects that we are doing in different parts of Spain. This initiative aims to rehabilitate homes for people with limited resources. We consider that everyone has the right to decent housing.

In addition, Painting for Others also aims to sensitize the youngest to the problems faced by people who are in their closest environment.
Valencia, Madrid, the Canary Islands, Galicia and Cantabria are some of the areas in Spain where this summer hundreds of young people will be painting houses.

⚫ESTONIA One of the activities that we carry ou ⚫ESTONIA

One of the activities that we carry out regularly is to visit the elderly in different residences. In the summer of 2019, one of the volunteers, Rebecca (18), a student in the last year of secondary school, after one of these visits thought about what she could do to help regularly. She studies art and is very good at painting. She thought that a painting workshop could be organized in a nursing home near where she lives.

Through IYC Eesti we contacted the residence management and told them about Rebecca's initiative. They liked the idea and a little before the end of the year we started to go there every 15 days to paint with the elderly. Rebecca planned all the different sessions: painting a vase with flowers, copying landscapes, etc. Several people helped financially to buy the material.
About 10 nursing home residents participated. Some are very fond of painting and it gave them the opportunity to paint again after several years, for others it was a good challenge that they enjoyed and there were always some who came to see the talents of their friends.

When the covid19 crisis started we had to stop the activity for a while, but we hope to continue.

⚫SWEDEN For those that aren’t too young but n ⚫SWEDEN

For those that aren’t too young but not too old and try to be as independent as they have lived their whole  life, we have started a course that teaches them to unlock the knowledge of their smartphones.

With the collaboration with a Swedish foundation, Bilda, we started a 8 day course where we use a platform that give them a case which they need to solve with the help of their personal phones and then help them if they struggle. The name of the project is “Digitaljakten”. Of course we end the day with a traditional Swedish “Fika”.

The project is still ongoing but is on hold because of the current situation with the pandemic.

🔴SPAIN We have started supporting and reinforc 🔴SPAIN

We have started supporting and reinforcing school children from families with difficulties, IN Pontevedra, Spain. Many of them have been affected by the COVID crisis and at the same time, the little ones have suffered the consequences of the interruption of the school year. This initiative will help parents to have a better work-family balance.

The support is on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 to 12:30 and from September, it will be done in the afternoon. During the support, they will have reinforcement tasks and support in the summer homework. They will also do different workshops and socio-educational activities. We will provide the school material, with perspectives to the school year.

We have all the relevant safety and hygiene measures: facilities disinfection, two-meter separation between the tables, use of masks and disinfectant gel.

In this area of Spain we also carry out projects aimed at promoting volunteering and social participation, street routes to attend to the homeless, volunteers in hospitals, environmental programs and we give awareness talks in schools.

⚫SLOVAKIA We annually organize a trip to a Fran ⚫SLOVAKIA

We annually organize a trip to a Franciscan monastery in Serbia. This monastery, situated in the Serbian ‘’Bač’’ surpasses an area of 2 500 m2 and is entrusted to a lonely monk and senior, father Josip.

Father Josip cares for a wide garden on his own, where he grows various vegetables and breeds goats and various poultry, of whom he makes home-made milk. Father is a very generous man and many poorer locals are dependent on his generosity.

From this trip we returned enriched with long lasting experience. After the garden work we moved on to the library, where we assorted books (and often came together with specimens from the 16., 15. or even the 14. century). Some may have milked a domestic animal or feed poultry for the first time, from which Father Josip made us a delicious soup. There was much to do in the local manse, whose church is quite shabby.

As the origin of this monastery is rooted in the 12. century, one can find here a wide scale of old liturgical as well as archaeological artefacts that are exposed in many rooms of the interior and a catacomb of the tombs of the previous monks as well.

🔴LATVIA "This year, before all the COVID lock 🔴LATVIA

"This year, before all the COVID lockdowns, I had the opportunity to volunteer several times in Rigas Central Prison. Each time we were between two and four volunteers, and we brought a collection of board games and card games lent us by a local shop. Most of the volunteers were apprehensive the first time they went, but it quickly became quite fun.

It can be a bit frightening to visit a prison. What kind of people will I meet there? What have they done? What should I talk about? In this situation, explaining the rules of the game or laughing together about the mistakes of beginners makes it easy to break the ice.

The people we met seemed so normal to me. Of course, they had lived through rather tough situations and in some cases done some terrible things. But they didn't put on any airs or pretend to be something they weren't. They were just grateful for people "from freedom" to come visit them and help them pass the time. Even though some of the prisoners were too shy to say so, it was obvious that all of them were really happy to have had a change of pace from their day-to-day routine. And for me, it got me to thinking: What if I had grown up in their situation? I could easily have ended up in the same place". Florian's testimony, one of the volunteers in Latvia.

⚫IRELAND One of the key projects organised by B ⚫IRELAND

One of the key projects organised by Brosna centres during 2020, under the auspices of IYC (Ireland), is an international social engagement project in Hungary, with teenagers from Ireland, Finland, Hungary and Sweden. We have received approval for a grant from the EU’s Erasmus+ programme to carry out this project.

The activity allows participants from different countries to learn from each other while carrying out voluntary work, such as caring for children with Down’s syndrome, attending to elderly people at a
local nursing home, doing some repairing work at a nearby church, and teaching disadvantaged kids in the neighbourhood.

The project aims to create a multicultural experience that fosters acquiring key
European values of networking and friendship, and to develop life-skills such as empathy, teamwork, leadership, self-management and social entrepreneurship.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be able to carry out the project on the dates planned. But thankfully Erasmus+ have agreed to hold the funding for it until such time as we will be able to implement it: probably during the summer of 2021 at this stage.
